The waters off Wakulla County's Shell Point will be packed with colorful sailing vessels of all shapes and sizes the weekend of April 25-27. It's the 52nd Annual Stephen C. Smith Regatta to benefit the American Cancer Society.
The event is named in honor of Stephen Smith. He was a dedicated sail boater who succumbed to cancer before the age of 30. Over the past 52 years, the regatta has raised more than $600,000 for the American Cancer Society. Event Chair Andrea Schwendinger Bennett said all kinds of wind-powered vessels will be competing all weekend.
"We have races going on for spinnaker, PHRS (Phoenix Register of Shipping) vessels,
Hobie Cats and Weta vesseks. We have windsurfers, which are the most plentiful, and Sunfish.
Meanwhile, there are lots of shore-side activities Friday through Sunday.
