The City of Tallahassee held a double celebration for Myers Park on Saturday, February 8. The event also provided some landscaping help for those living around the park.
City Parks Superintendent Brian Hopper said there were two reasons for folks to come out to the park on Saturday.
"We're out here doing our Arbor Day event and also celebrating the 100th anniversary for Myers Park."
Hopper said the tree planting this year was especially needed. The park lost hundreds of trees during last May's tornadoes. Those storms also hit the Woodland Drive property of Kurt and Whitney Gray. After helping with the public planting, they got a few leftover trees to replace some of the ones they lost.
"We got 3 river birch and 1 pin oak," Gray remarked.
As for the Myers Park Centennial, the site's history actually predates 100 years. Apalachee people were already there when Hernando DeSoto arrived in 1539.
