Lots of school teachers end up having to buy classroom supplies out of their own pockets. That particularly holds true for art teachers. Now a North Florida artists' group has jumped in to help.

In the past year, art teachers in Leon County's public, private, charter and magnet schools have received a total of $10,000 in art supplies from a special committee of the Artists' League of the Big Bend. Amanda Karioth Thompson has been spearheading that effort.

"A lot of individual teachers don't end up with the kind of tools, supplies and resources that they need to meet the needs of their kids."

Thirty teachers and more than 1,000 students in those schools have benefited. The campaign has now won a statewide award from the Florida Art Education Association.
