Judge Aikens received a proclamation from the Leon County Commission on Veterans Day, honoring him for his longtime involvement in the county's Veterans Court.

Leon County's longest-serving judge will officially retire on Friday, Nov.22. That will coincide with a ceremony renaming the courthouse where Judge Augustus Aikens has worked since 1997 in his honor.

Judge Aikens said the idea of the building being dedicated as the "Judge Augustus D. Aikens, Jr. Leon County Courthouse" is something he's still getting used to.

"It's amazing and certainly a blessing to be given such an honor."

But even in retirement, Aikens insisted he'll stay busy. He plans to do whatever he can to reduce the local incidence of youthful gun violence.

"I've been blessed in so many ways and I want to give back for all that I've received and every opportunity, I look forward to it."

Friday's ceremony renaming the courthouse in Aikens' honor takes place at 1:30 p.m. in Courtroom 2E.
