A groundbreaking happens next week for a new building at the Tallahassee Museum. Itt will house a large cultural exhibit, as well as be a home for the museum's historic artifact collection.
Today, the Tallahassee Museum has a few small exhibit buildings scattered around the property. But the new structure, which will go between the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church and the Murat House, will be much larger and better equipped. Museum Executive Director Russell Daws says it will be the home for a brand new exhibit.
"This building will eventually hold a new exhibit called 'Journeys' looking at all the peoples, cultures, whether it be Greek, Irish, enslaved peoples. Because what we are today are reflections of those who came before us."
At the same time, he said the 1,200 square foot space will enable the permanent
display of the museum's vast assemblage of artifacts and historic displays, many of which haven't been seen by the public before.
"But it also is a great opportunity for us to bring out a lot more of our collection materials, because this building will be air conditioned, it'll have security, so we can bring out some of those priceless treasures that help tell the story."
Daws said the construction should be finished in 2025. The project was made possible in large part by a large gift from the Rotary Club of Tallahassee to commemorate the organization's 100th anniversary.
