North Florida and South Georgia still have strong connections to their Native American heritage. One case in point is the Annual Lower Muskogee Tribal Pow Wow. Tribe member Peggy Venable said this year's event is happening all weekend at the Tama Tribal Town, just outside of Whigham, Georgia.

"We have a 1700-era village that they can walk into and see how the houses looked and how they cooked. And then they can hear the Muskogee language and how we talked. And it just puts you back in time."

She said for many centuries, America's native peoples held periodic meetings called "pow wows" to encourage cooperation and more peaceful relations among the various tribal communities. This regional event, she stressed, continues this long tradition.

"We will have people from up in North Carolina, the Cherokees. And we'll have head dancers and arena directors and MCs. We'll have the Aztec Dancers with us this year, along with the inter-tribal dancing. We'll have stick ball so they can see how the Creeks and the Cherokees, along with the other Five Tribes, played stick ball."

Venable said all aspects of the event, Oct. 18-20, are open to all visitors.
