With just over three weeks to go before the general election, North Florida Democrats were going door-to-door, drumming up support for their candidates over the weekend.
One of those candidates was Yen Bailey. She's trying to unseat Republican Congressman Neal Dunn in the Second Congressional District. Bailey said the damage done by this year's hurricanes was top-of-mind for those in the eastern part of the district.
"The people that I talk to they are very concerned about getting FEMA funding; getting as much disaster relief as they can."
And what concerned Bailey were the many myths and rumors about relief funding that are making the rounds. She said much of her face time with voters in the district has been spent trying to dispel disinformation.
But there was also lots of optimism among the canvassers. County Party Chair Ryan Ray said he was encouraged by the lack of a comparable Republican ground game in the area.
"We're seeing unprecedented levels of volunteer enthusiasm and donor engagement. Just this morning we're sending out canvassers on the Democratic side getting out the message, so we're really excited. I think things look really good, especially here in Leon County when it comes to the Democrats and the Harris/Walz campaign."
Registered Democrats still outnumber Republicans in Leon County. Also the latest stats from the Supervisor of Elections Office show more Democrats have returned vote-by-mail ballots in advance of the November fifth election.
