Leon County hosted a citizens' engagement event at the Public Safety Complex the evening of Thursday, July 25. The focus was disaster resilience.
Nearly 100 people showed up for the session, which included complimentary boxed sandwiches. They sat in the second-floor command center where real disaster responders would sit in an actual emergency. County Emergency Management Director Kevin Peters was master of ceremonies.
"At Leon County, we emphasize 3 steps to resiliency: prepare, act, recover," he told the crowd by way of introduction.
And he said there were a couple of reasons for the program.
"Partially, it's a behind-the-scenes look at what we do here at the county to keep the community safe during a disaster and some of the work that we do to prepare. But it's also a chance for them to learn more about being prepared and making their homes more resilient."
Other topics included information about who to call when disaster strikes and the basics of building a household emergency response plan.
