A Tallahassee writer has penned a first-person account of the event that helped propel Ronald Reagan to the presidency in 1980. The book also draws strong political parallels between Reagan and Donald Trump.
John Nogowski was a sportswriter for the newspaper in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1980. That's when Ronald Reagan's campaign paid the paper to stage a debate with Reagan's primary opponent George H.W. Bush. Today, Nagowski sees many similarities between Reagan's approach to politics and Donald Trump's.
"We just saw that incredible speech of his that was just so dark and so negative. It just made me think immediately back to Ronald Reagan's inaugural address where he said, 'Government isn't the solution to the problem; government IS the problem!"
Nogowski shares his experiences and observations in his new book "Nashua." He'll read from it and sign copies at 6:30 this Thursday evening at Midtown Reader, which also underwrites WFSU.
