Leon County Democrats await the start of candidate speeches.

The day before President Biden dropped his re-election bid, Leon County Democrats were trying to keep their eyes on local and state politics. The party held its rally and barbeque Saturday, July 21 at the Lake Ella American Legion.

Local candidates gave speeches while attendees consumed lots of barbeque. Leon County Democratic Party Chair Ryan Ray insisted national uncertainties were in no way affecting the electability of local Democrats.

"I will call my shot here on WFSU: Laurie Lawson Cox will be defeated and Democratic firefighter Jeremy Rogers will be elected (for Leon County School Board District 4.) I think all things are really positive for us. I'd rather be a Democrat than a Republican from an electoral standpoint here in Leon County."

Even though the percentage of Leon County voters registered as "Democrat" is now below 50 percent for the first time in history. In recent years, the fastest growing designation for the county's voters is neither Republican nor Democrat.
