Many military veterans find themselves in unpleasant places after returning to civilian life. Around 60 human service organizations will be available to help the region's veterans this weekend during an event on the FAMU campus.
Since 2013, the yearly Veterans Stand Down has provided thousands of vets with everything from free haircuts to legal help. Donna Barron, president of the Tallahassee Veterans Organization, said many of these services focus on the needs of unhoused vets.
"Some of our veterans would prefer to stay where they are, however we do have a number of providers who'll be at Stand Down to help with the housing situation."
Barron says that's really important now, because of a new Florida law that bans sleeping in public spaces. The Stand Down happens Friday and Saturday at FAMU's Lawson Center. Free rides to and from are available on StarMetro buses.
