Tallahassee counselors offer free therapy in wake of tornado trauma

Many Tallahassee residents are still anxious in the wake of the recent storms. Now a local group of professional therapists is offering to provide free help.

Tallahassee therapist Lorin Brand believes the May 10th tornadoes left a lot of psychological trauma in their wake.

"It came out of nowhere, first thing in the morning, people were laying in their beds, not prepared, and all of a sudden their roof is ripped off. So I think there is a lot of terror and a lot of folks are still suffering adverse effects from that."

Brand and other local therapists in the Tallahassee Area Trauma Recovery Network will provide free group counseling at 6 p.m., Monday, June 17 at John Wesley United Methodist Church on Old St. Augustine Road. She says it's a kind of help with a great track record.

"It's helped millions of people, in particular used a lot with post-traumatic stress disorder and it's endorsed by the Department of Defense and lots of other agencies. There's been a lot of research done on EMDR and its efficacy."

Brand says there will sessions for both grownups and children.
