Leon County Emergency Management Director Kevin Peters (at the podium) stands before City of Tallahassee, Leon County, Leon School District and local non-profit human service officials to urge area residents to get ready for what could be an historically busy hurricane season.

City of Tallahassee and Leon County officials held a storm preparedness media event on the eve of the start of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season at the Public Safety Complex on Easterwood Drive. The city's recent tornado encounter served to help drive home the preparedness message.

Tallahassee National Weather Service Meteorologist Mark Wool said the 2024 storm season could be the worst on record.

"A 'normal' season has 14 named storms. This year, we're predicting 17 to 25, considerably above normal. Eight-to-13 hurricanes, and 4-to-7 major hurricanes."

But, as Leon County Administrator Vince Long noted it only takes one storm to cause massive destruction. And that storm doesn't even have to be a hurricane, as the tornadoes of May 10th proved.

"We saw more damage from that storm than perhaps the three most recent hurricanes combined, Hermine and Irma and Michael."

Long said the area's emergency managers are still learning lessons from the tornadoes in hopes of improving overall disaster response. Still, every household and neighborhood also need to have plans in place before the ill winds blow.
