Volunteers help a historic Tallahassee church recover from tornado damage

Tom Flanigan

One of Tallahassee's oldest churches wasn't spared from the tornadoes that tore through the town a few Fridays back. That church was the historic St. Michael and All Angels parish a few blocks away from Florida A&M University.

Saturday morning, May 26, an army of volunteers was clearing storm debris from the church property. Among those volunteers were several members of Tallahassee's Sunrise Rotary Club, including Sihahrokh Missoudi.

"I'm part of this community for 47 years and being a Rotary member, they called today our service day, so we decided to come."

Working shoulder-to-shoulder with the volunteers was St. Michael and All Angels Rector Father Hugh Chapman.

"We realized we were going to need help, we reached out to our sister churches and they're represented here today. But the community came. I think that's a good sign. Whenever anything unforeseen happens, we all need to run towards whomever needs the help."

But more help is needed. The church hall roof suffered tornado damage. Insurance may or may not cover the cost of repairs.
