For too many low-income families, healthy, nutritious foods are seldom a part of regular meals. A Leon County program is showing young sters how delicious those foods can be and even how to prepare them.
The evening of Tuesday, April 30, Kate Frisbee with the IFAS Family Nutrition office was showing the little chefs at Pineview Elementary School how to make a dish some of them had never seen, much less eaten.
"One pan Chicken Alfredo. They did great. They loved it! I think there were some who'd never had the whole-grain pasta and flour."
Leon Children's Services Council Executive Director Cecka Rose Green sees a flourishing partnership getting more healthy food options into those neighborhoods where such choices are rare.
"TasteBuds and the City and the County and the CSC to make this come to fruition so that we're embedded in the communities and not asking them to come learn, but rather take the learning to them."
She said the ultimate goal is to set up neighborhood healthy food stores, owned and operated by local people.
