The City of Tallahassee is building a second senior citizen center in the rapidly-growing Northeast part of town. This is just the latest in a series of major construction projects for the City.
A gala groundbreaking - complete with two giant hot air balloons as a backdrop - happened Tuesday morning in the Canopy Neighborhood on Welaunee Boulevard. Ashley Edwards is in charge of the City's Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Department that oversees what will soon be two senior citizen centers.
"This new facility is going to allow us to offer expanded programs for our rapidly growing population of active seniors. Situated on the 6 acres of land behind me, when it's completed, the 40,000 square foot building will house a double size multi-purpose gym with space for - wait for it - pickleball!"
There will also be plenty of space for lots of other activities. The $25-million center is being built at the same time as the City's new police headquarters and a southside transit hub. But City Manager Reese Goad is confident all will be done as promised.
"All of these projects that we're working on have different contractors, which is great! So we've a lot happening. We have the capacity because we've diversified the contractors that are doing these jobs."
