Tallahassee has seen a lot of changes over the past 200 years. Now a new effort is underway to place signs around town to commemorate historic things that aren't there anymore.

Tallahassee Historical Society President Bob Holladay was among those at the dedication of the first plaque. It was unveiled Thursday at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and will be the first of several.

"We've come up with 9 of them. We're stil wrangling over the 10th marker. So we'll see where we come out on this. But this is the first one, the old fairgrounds."

That fairgrounds was the site of agricultural exhibits and other attractions = including a horse track - between 1880 and 1925. It was actually the city's second fairgrounds site. The first is believed to have been close to Lake Jackson, but the exact location hasn't been confirmed. The Historical Society, along with the City of Tallahassee and Florida Department of State will be placing the other historic markers at various sites throughout the Bicentennial Year.
