Homeowners are always welcome at the Leon County Property Appraiser's office.

In Florida, the matter of property tax exemptions has become ever more complicated in recent years. The Legislature keeps adding exemptions to the list nearly every year. Leon County's Property Appraiser's office is helping to sort it all out.

Leon Property Appraiser Akin Akinyemi said this is a busy time of year, as the filing deadline for new exemptions is this Thursday, March 1st.

"Our primary goal is to help people to save money off their taxes by giving them information that will help them to apply and qualify for any exemptions."

Any home occupied by the owner gets the basic homestead property tax exemption. But Exemption Specialist Meghan Poskey said there are many more that might apply.

"For people with disabilities, including those that are service connected, meaning military related or not. Anyone who's a widow or widower, a limited income senior, there are a variety of other exemptions."

The Property Appraiser's office has expanded its services this week in advance of the filing deadline.
