Dozens of adults with intellectual and cognitive disabilities now have a Tallahassee home to call their own. The ribbon cutting for the Independence Landing community at Southwood took place the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 13.
The event brought out hundreds of people.
One of them, named "Ryan," is now a proud resident of Indepence Landing.
"Here I have people to surround me with friendship and what feels like love. I'm not just sitting at home watching my parents stare at their phones. I have a life here. That means something!"
More than a dozen years ago, Independence Landing was just an idea for Alison Tant - now a Tallahassee State Representative - and a handful of supporters.
"It was something that I started out not knowing what it was actually going to be like and look like. And I'll tell you, it's better than anything I could have dreamt up.
Indpendence Landing can now house 70 people on 10 acres. Its second phase will double that space and capacity.
