A member of the Leon County Commission is proposing a millage reduction, saying county residents need it and their government can afford it. Meanwhile, the Florida Legislature is moving to keep a lid on those hikes.
County Commissioner Bill Proctor says the county got a windfall last year, with property values going up 13 percent. But it’s come at a cost. Proctor says says he sees his neighbors in the grocery store, worrying about money, and proposes...
“...that we really need to possibly consider a millage reduction.”
Proctor’s suggestion came at the commission’s annual retreat on Monday. It also came as bills are moving in the Legislature that would constrain attempts to raise local millage rates.
Those proposals would require a two-thirds vote by the local governing body that proposes them before rate hikes could be approved.
