Too many kids in the Tallahassee area still have no bed to call their own. A charitable group that builds beds for needy kids is hard pressed to keep up with the local demand.
The group is called Sleep in Heavenly Peace. For several years, it's held regular bed builds done by volunteers. But Executive Director John Cousins says the demand is outsripping production.
"I now have 625 applicants and 1295 beds in front of me."
On Saturday, Jan. 13, the Northeast Tallahassee Kimley-Horn parking lot was the site of the latest build, staffed by volunteers from the Florida Engineering Society. Cousins said the group could do even more with a bit more help from the community.
"What we need - what would help us - is more team members that we could have bigger builds. And if we had a facility I could double or triple it. We'd have one-stop shopping where we could build, store and deliver from and have everything come to one location."
Sleep in Heavenly Peace has 270 chapters across the country, including a dozen in Florida.
