Most churches hold fund raisers from time to time. But a parish in downtown Tallahassee has a tradition of splitting the proceeds from its big seasonal fundraiser with the community's non-profit organizations.

St. John's Episcopal Church has been holding its yearly market event since the late 1800s. The church's current rector, the Reverend Lonnie Lacy, hasn't been there quite as long.

"Each year, thanks to the support of our Tallahassee neighbors, we're able to award approximately $15,000 to community organizations in the form of market grants."

Last year's Market grant beneficiaries included Big Bend Hospice, Boys Town, Eldercare Services and the Oasis Center for Women and Girls. The Market happens this Saturday from eight 'til two in the church hall on Calhoun Street.
