The Leon County Sheriff's Office has been awarded a quarter-million-dollar federal grant to continue its research into community policing strategies that don’t involve violence.
The grant comes from the U.S. Attorney General’s Office.
Its purpose is to help the Sheriff’s Office find more ways to reduce officer-involved shootings by researching and implementing effective de-escalation strategies.
Sheriff Walt McNeil says the grant will help build trust between LCSO deputies and the communities they serve.
He says LCSO is dedicated to the principles of community-oriented policing, which focuses on collaboration to improve public safety.
