Local university campuses are mostly empty till after Labor Day

Florida State University, Florida A&M University and Tallahassee Community College all came through Hurricane Idalia relatively unscathed. They all expect students back on campus next Tuesday.

Wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour were reported at FAMU’s Bragg Memorial Stadium as Hurricane Idalia moved through the region early Wednesday. But FAMU President Larry Robinson says there appears to be no major damage on the university’s main Tallahassee campus. The university will continue to assess the situation as the storm proceeds.

Meanwhile, FSU posted a message on its website: “The severe weather threat from Hurricane Idalia has passed the Tallahassee campus. All FSU students, faculty, and staff should continue to exercise caution.”

And TCC closed its campuses through the remainder of the week – with the exception of the Florida Public Safety Institute, which stayed open and operational to serve as a staging site for first responders.

All three schools plan to resume classes on Tuesday, September 5, following the Labor Day holiday.
