Tallahassee marked Memorial Day at a number of veterans' cemeteries. One of these was local VFW Post 3308 graveyard near the city's international airport.

Leon County Commissioner Brian Welch was the ceremony's featured speaker.

"Everyone who sacrifices a period of their life to serve in our military is brave. And those who die in the spirit of that bravery are the treasured few who exemplify the generosity and benevolence of the American spirit."

Local AMVET Post Commander Gordon Lightfoot noted no American troops are presently engaged in combat.

"We don't have any service personnel coming back in caskets today, which is a good thing. But I think it enhances Memorial Day. The public needs to be more involved and see more."

An involvement Lightfoot saw at Sunday's Tallahassee National Cemetery ceremony, attended by more than 300 people according to event organizers. Another Memorial Day observance happened at Tallahassee's Oakland Cemetery, hosted by the American Legion Post 13.
