Not long ago, there weren't enough jobs for everyone who wanted to work. Now the push is on to recruit workers for all the jobs that are open.
Around 700 high school students from Leon, Gadsden, Jefferson and Wakulla counties were checking out all the local job opportunities during the Leon Works Expo at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center on Friday, April 28. Darryl Jones, deputy director of the Office of Economic Vitality and a Leon School Board Member said there were lots of possibilities.
"Our local business community, as well as other local employers, including government, our hospitals, our institutions of higher learning."
Although the focus was on the trades and not academics. Bill Roth, who teaches commercial truck driving at Tallahassee Community College, said the pay's not bad.
"You're looking at about 65-70 thousand gross. You can do that in your first year."
Jarrad Beard, who owns the Tallahassee Red Wing shoe store, said his company has lots of openings.
"Cutting leather, dyeing the leather, all the way into the sales side of things. One of the great things I love about Red Wing Shoe Company is interacting with our customer base."
And all of the expo employers were happy to interact with a new generation of potential employees.
