City staff recommends a 0.62 increase in the millage rate

The Tallahassee City Commission will hold a workshop today (Wednesday), taking up the possibility of raising property taxes in the next fiscal year.

City staff is recommending a 0.62 increase in the millage rate to cover additional costs for public safety.

The budget materials for the workshop say that would put the typical household’s millage rate at 4.72, representing an increase of about $139 per year.

The city’s general fund has a projected deficit of $9.5 million. Much of that is due to a proposed increase in the Tallahassee Police Department’s budget. The proposal includes 20 more officers and additional advanced technology.

The workshop will start at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday in the City Commission chambers at City Hall.
