Tallahassee's yearly Word of South Festival filled Cascades Park with people over the weekend. From Friday evening until Sunday afternoon, there was nearly non-stop music. And there were also lots of words. Many uttered by famous historian and author John Meacham in regards America's current political situation.

"It's pretty self-evident to me that if you break the constitutional order and the rule of law at the highest levels, what makes any of us think it'll be safe down below?" he asked as many in the packed AC Hotel by Marriott ballroom nodded in agreement.

Meacham's standing-room-only crowd included Miami Herald Tallahassee Bureau Chief Mary Ellen Klas.

"One of the things about John Meacham is his absolute perception and ability to relate where we are today and the questions that we as Americans have and tie it into the historical facts," she commented.

Meanwhile audience member Gayle Nelson was impressed with the capacity audience for the event.

"Just look at the people that are here! Young, old, Black, white. This is a wonderful statement for Tallahassee and about Tallahassee."

That diversity was also reflected in the dozens of writers and musicians taking part in this year's Word of South.
