The Tallahassee Urban League and other community partners hosted a service fair on the city's south side on Saturday, April 22. The event featured health screenings, neighborhood safety resources and free school supplies. More than a dozen community organizations joined the event. The Tallahassee Urban League, headed by Curtis Taylor, was the event's prime organizer.
"We're putting on this community health fair for free health screenings. Also crime prevention. We have law enforcement out here talking about ways to make your home and community safer. And then more importantly, we're giving back to our young people (with) our school giveaway."
Taylor said more such happenings are planned and his organization is also proposing a new national observance.
"You know, we have Mothers Day and Fathers Day. We want to have a national day where we recognize our youth where we're encouraging them and let them know that we appreciate them and empower them and let them know that they're our future leaders."
Taylor said the ongoing goal is to improve the quality-of-life for those living in the area's low-income neighborhoods.
