Leon County has dozens of lakes within its borders. One of these was getting a shoreline cleanup on Saturday in honor of Earth Day.

The county's Sustainability Manager Cyndel Brunell welcomed several dozen cleanup volunteers to Lake Henrietta off Springhill Road.

"I invite you to go ahead and grab some equipment and get started and again, thank you so much for joining us for this cleanup," she announced before the the volunteers moved out and started pulling trash and debris from the lake's banks, Brunell said people can do things to celebrate Earth Day throughout the year.

"One of those things is preventing litter, so making sure that you personally are taking care of the disposable items that you have and making sure that they're getting into a recycling bin or a trash bin. Making the decision to walk instead of drive sometimes, or try to take your reusable bag to the store. Your small actions can contribute to big change."

The nation's very first Earth Day, marking the start of the modern environmental movement, took place in 1970.
