The world's most advanced magnet lab will keep its Tallahassee address for at least another 5 years. The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory has received its basic 5 year funding from the National Science Foundation.
The big news came from Mag Lab Director Greg Boebinger.
"I'm pleased to say that the funding for the next five years of the Magnet Lab operations is in place now. And that's the excitement over the past few days."
The $195.5 million grant is 6 percent above the last grant. And while its awarding was never seriously in doubt, Boebinger said its denial would have meant the end of the line for the world-famous research center.
"We use that to build other initiatives and have even broader impacts. So, if you will, this is the central pillar around which we build the rest of the cathedral."
A "cathedral" that will be open to everyone once again on February 25th for the Mag Lab's extremely popular open house event.
