LCSO says this gun and bag of drugs were found in a Godby student's backpack.

A Godby High School student was arrested Friday after the smell of marijuana led to the discovery of drugs and a loaded gun.

A concerned teacher took the 15-year-old student to an administrator’s office. The Leon County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) says a search of the student’s backpack turned up a plastic bag with approximately 12 grams of marijuana.

School officials also discovered a loaded 9mm handgun in the backpack.

A press release from the sheriff’s office says the School Resource Deputy was notified and took the juvenile into custody. An investigation determined the teen purchased the weapon from an unknown source, and there was no intended violence against fellow students or school staff.

The teen was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center. He is charged with Possession of a Firearm on School Property and Possession of Cannabis.

As part of its Cease Fire initiative, LCSO and Big Bend Crime Stoppers have teamed up to offer a $1,000 reward leading to the arrest of an individual illegally possessing a firearm.

To report a tip anonymously, call 850-574-TIPS (8477). Callers will get a tip code that can be checked for updates on the case. If an arrest is made, a pickup code will be sent with the location where the reward can be collected.

LCSO says students, staff, and parents are urged to contact their School Resource Deputy and school officials directly to report their concerns, or they can use the FortifyFL app.
