State Rep. Jay Trumbull (R-Panama City) has served eight years in the Florida House.

In less than a month, Republican Rep. Jay Trumbull of Panama City raised nearly $300,000 for his campaign to replace outgoing state Sen. George Gainer.

Trumbull was elected to the House in 2014. Due to term limits, he's not eligible to seek reelection to the House this year. Instead, he's running to represent state Senate District 2 — which covers Bay, Calhoun, Jackson, Washington, Holmes, Walton and part of Okaloosa Counties.

Campaign finance records show Trumbull opened his account on June 7 and had raised just under $292,826 as of July 1.

Contributions to Trumbull's campaign primarily come from individuals giving the maximum $1,000 donation, real estate developers and conservative political committees.

The Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee contributed $4,629.63 to Trumbull's campaign.

Trumbull is facing political newcomer Regina Piazza of Destin in the GOP primary election on Aug. 23.

As of July 1, Piazza had raised $17,404 and had loaned her campaign $28,500.

The GOP primary winner will run against Santa Rosa Beach Democrat Carolynn Zonia in the November general election. Zonia had raised $7,503.36 as of July 1.
