Tallahassee Democratic state Rep. Allison Tant could run unopposed this year after problems with her Republican challenger’s paperwork arose this week.
Small business owner Ashley Guy qualified to run for office last week, but voter registration records show she hasn’t been a Republican long enough to seek the GOP’s nomination to run for Florida House District 9. Guy is the only other candidate besides Tant who's qualified to have their name on the ballot in the upcoming elections.
Guy has been a member of the Republican Party for more than two months, but state law requires candidates to have been registered with a political party for a year before they may qualify to run in that party’s primary election.
Records from the Leon County Supervisor of Elections show Guy registered as a Republican on April 4, 2022 — only about a couple months before the candidate qualifying period. Before that, Guy wasn’t registered with a specific party.
On Monday, the Florida Democratic Party and two Democratic electors filed a lawsuit challenging Guy’s candidacy.
Guy declined a request for comment and would not say whether she plans to drop out of the race.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the Florida Division of Elections' website shows that Guy is still qualified to run for office. Her campaign website was also still live.
