Florida's Capital City has a new weapon in the fight against breast cancer. Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare has expanded an existing program into the region's first clinic dedicated exclusively to breast cancer patients.
Clinic Partner Dr. Bret Howard said the new facility is essentially a one-stop-treatment-shop.
"This clinic allows us to streamline breast care, specifically breast cancer care, allowing our time from diagnosis of breast cancer to surgery and treatment, to shorten that time dramatically."
A big factor in shortening that time, added Dr. Howard, was being able to combine a number of personnel and appointments into a single visit.
"Instead of patients having to go to different specialists: their oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeon, geneticist, all this, we bring it all to one clinic, one appointment, where the patient can get everything from A to Z and walk out of there knowing they have the team behind them to attack cancer and cure them."
The clinic carries the name of a Tallahassee legend in the fight against breast cancer, Sharon Ewing Walker who died from the disease in 2005.
"Out of our Walker Breast Program, which includes our mammography and screening tools, we developed what we call the Breast Clinic."
The clinic is located in the T-M-H Cancer Center off Surgeons Drive.
