A large bell tower will soon be rising above the Tallahassee National Cemetery. The structure will be able to play all military service songs and sound "Taps" at the end of each day in honor of those buried there.
The tower, as tall as a 4-story building, was made possible by a $100,000 fundraising campaign by the local AMVETS Post 1776. Cemetery Director Raymond Miller credited one Post member in particular.
"His name is Randy Miller and he was the one that was responsible for a lot of the funding. He saw it almost to fruition and unfortunately right now he is interred at Tallahassee National Cemetery. So he'll be in the shadows of that carillon he helped build."
And Randy Miller's fellow AMVETS member John Folsom was happy to see the project come to fruition.
"I'm anxious to hear the bells ring and probably within a couple of months we'll have some type of dedication we can do."
The bell tower is expected to be up and functional by mid-month.
