Leon County seniors will soon start receiving COVID-19 vaccines. Beginning Dec. 31, the Leon County Health Department will offer drive-through vaccinations for people 65 and older along with high-risk frontline healthcare workers.
The vaccines will be administered at the Leon County-Florida Department of Health’s main building at 2695 Municipal Way. Residents will have to call the department at 850-404-6300 and choose option 1 to make an appointment. The department is offering the two-dose Moderna vaccine.
The department says its experiencing phone outages across the state due to the high volume of calls coming in.
“We have been waiting for the arrival of a vaccine since the pandemic began. I am confident this vaccine and the others in development, will stop the spread of the virus and save lives,” Claudia Blackburn, the Leon County Health Officer, said in a press release issued by the department.
DOH-Leon main offices will be closed December 31 and January 1 in observance of the New Year holiday but will continue operating its vaccine clinic. COVID-19 vaccination appointments will be made on a first come, first served basis. Residents will need to bring government-issued ID’s. The Florida Department of Health says 1,000 Leon County residents have been vaccinated so far.
The Moderna vaccine is administered in two doses, 28 days apart. It is not yet known how long the vaccine can protect against the virus.
