This Year's Big Bend Heart Walk Takes A Different Path

Last year's Big Bend Heart Walk took place at Tallahassee's Cascades Park.

Instead of an "everybody-at-one-place-and-one-time" event, organizers say participants will decide the where and when of the November 7th fundraiser.

The pandemic has greatly changed the way that non-profits raise money for worthy causes. That includes some big changes for this year's Big Bend Heart Walk in Tallahassee.
Clark Brookstone has been a Heart Walk volunteer and promoter for years.

"The American Heart Association, which has been around for a long time since 1924, they're still doing everything they can to raise awareness and they have to have the funds to do the research. So we're doing everything we can. This is my 8th year for being the captain of my teach, the Heart Strong Vets."

In past years, the event attracted thousands of people to a single place at one time for the annual Heart Walk. Last year it was at Cascades Park. But Brookstone said that has changed.

"We're going to do what's called 'digital' this year. The big date is Nov. 7 for the Tallahassee area. We've been fundraising and putting teams together for probably a month or two at least."

And Brookstone explained how this year's digital Heart Walk will go down.

"There are going to be teams walking all over town at different times on that day to commemorate the big event. Not everybody at the same place and time as we normally do. But everyone's getting involved and you don't have to have any skills or anything like that. We just want to get many people involved and make them aware of all the great things the American Heart Association does."

Certainly individuals are welcome to walk, but Brookstone suggests forming a team of friends, family, co-workers, to provide more money for the Heart Association.

"The web site is: www.bigbendheartwalk.org. All you have to do is type in whatever team it was or who the person is you want to donate on their behalf. And then that starts the process and you follow a couple of prompts after that."

Again, the date for this year's "digital" Big Bend Heart Walk is Saturday, November 7th.
