Cummings, Otte To Face Off In November For County Commission At-Large Group 1

The primary election narrowed the packed field in the Leon County Commissioner at-large group 1 race down to two candidates, who will compete in the general election in November.

Longtime attorney Carolyn Cummings enjoyed a stable lead after polls closed Tuesday night. With some vote-by-mail ballots still outstanding late Tuesday, Cummings had just shy of 31 percent of the vote with all precincts reporting.

During a recent Political Perspectives program on WFSU, she said her experience representing all kinds of people in court makes her ready to represent Leon county residents.

“I’ve advocated for thousands here in Leon County, and I would like to bring that experience, that knowledge, to represent the entire citizenry,” Cummings said.

Cummings will face Kelly Otte, who came in second--receiving more than 20 percent of the vote. Otte is a familiar face in the nonprofit world. On the same Perspectives program, Otte said that experience makes her a good option for voters.

“For the last 25 years, I have dug into this county with every possible fiber of my being,” Otte said last month. “Two things that I think I’ve accomplished really well, one is to provide incredible services.”

Otte recently left her executive director post at the nonprofit the PACE Center for Girls.
