Tallahassee residents could soon see an increase in their garbage bills. During their upcoming meeting, city commissioners are expected to discuss a plan to raise rates by a dollar a month for residential service.

The increase will help pay for the rising cost of recycling. Right now, Marpan sorts and processes recyclables for the city and county. But the market is changing and it now costs the company more to sort recyclables than it can get back by selling them. Marpan has agreed to stay open for another year to give the city and county time to work out a solution. Both local governments are expected to approve increased payments to the company under a short term contract.
