Tallahassee's School of Arts and Sciences Hosts National Seminar on Conscious Discipline

School discipline doesn't have to mean punishing the students. Over the weekend of Feb. 8 & 9 a Tallahassee charter school was the scene of a seminar on an alternative form of keeping order in the classroom.

More than 100 teachers were paying rapt attention to the weekend's presenters at the School of Arts and Sciences' Centre of Tallahassee seminar. Principal Lindsey Merrick said they came from all over.

"There's someone here from Mexico, there's a group from Oregon, Alabama and all over the United States," she pointed out.

They were all there to learn the concept of "Conscious Discipline." Merrick explained it focuses on changing the attitudes and behaviors of the adults first.

"We're re-tooling them, teaching them how to self-regulate themselves, so they can then teach the children how to self-regulate and ultimately solve problems."

The School of Arts and Sciences has already adopted the idea into its day-to-day operations.
