Animal Adoptions Galore at "Take Me Home" Happening

Tom Flanigan

Potential pet owners were shopping for furry friends on Saturday, Jan. 11 at the North Florida Fairgrounds during the Eighth Annual Take Me Home animal adoption event.

More than a dozen animal rescue groups were on the scene. Among them, Gadsden County's Rest Your Paws Refuge, whose Tracey Raker said didn't start out as an animal adoption organization.

"We also have a boarding and grooming facility in Quincy," she explained. "We started doing rescue because we found kittens, puppies and dogs left at our doors. So we decided to try and help them out and find some homes."

Among the toughest animals to place are adult cats. But Melanie Hohmann with ECAH Animals said events like Saturday's sometimes bear fruit afterwards.

"Sometimes we don't get a lot of adoptions, but our name gets out there and we meet a lot of nice people and it's a great way for the community to work together."

Meanwhile, a significant number of Take Me Home attendees were seen leaving the grounds with new furry friends in tow.
