The Leon County School District has begun beefing up security at its high schools. This will include driveway checkpoints at some schools.
District Security Chief John Hunkiar said Leon High’s new checkpoint in the school’s front driveway is almost ready to go.
“Shed, shack, there’s a lot of different ways to refer to it,” he mused.
Occupying the checkpoint during school hours will be a security monitor.
“These are folks who are primarily assigned to the schools to be eyes and ears, to be on the perimeter to work with our school resource officers. So we’re going to staff it with security monitors. That little building will also have a lot of the infrastructure, like access to the security cameras.”
Visitors will also check in there before being cleared to actually enter the school. Hunkiar says Lincoln and Godby high schools will have similar checkpoints sometime in the coming year.
