Tallahassee Community College has received $1 million from the National Science Foundation to launch a STEM scholars program for students studying science, technology, engineering or math.
“This program allows us to provide scholarships for students who are pursuing careers that are in the STEM field. It also provides us the opportunity to support those students with tutors and coaches and internships,” said TCC Provost Madeline Pumariega.
The new program was announced during a press conference at TCC’s first Stem Summit on Tuesday.
Max Ngnepieba, a senior at Rickards High School, attended the event and says he's interested in scholarshp opportunities.
“I talk about the money situation with my parents all the time and this would benefit me, but also my parents and family. It will allow me to do what I can and allow my parents to not worry about other situations with me going to college.”
Former NASA Scientist Kantis Simmons was the keynote speaker at the STEM summit. He says he is pleased the NSF funded a community college, noting many such awards often end up at universities.
