Substitute teaching in Leon County just got more lucrative. Today the district announced the hourly rate of pay for substitute teachers is rising from $12 per hour to $14 per hour.

The pay increase goes into effect immediately. And is a sizeable bump compared to two years ago when the hourly rate was $10 per hour.

The district hopes the pay increase will entice substitute teachers to return to the classroom officials say was a shortage of subs has caused some teachers to not be able to use leave or sick days.
