The Leon County Library system was giving away vegetable seeds to anyone with a library card on Saturday, August 10. Patrons at the B.L. Perry Branch Library on South Adams Street were also getting expert help on how to tend their new gardens.
The branch's program room was full of eager gardeners seeking advice from Leon County Cooperative Extension office staff, like Director Marcus Boston.
"I know this is a busy weekend with back-to-school," he remarked, "but at the same time we do have these seeds available for folks to come by and start those fall gardens and start creating some produce for the home."
Boston added, a successful garden needs more than a just a plot of dirt and good intentions.
"I think this is a great opportunity for folks to come and get the free seeds, make the connection with the community and also to see some of the programs and opportunities that are available through the local extension service."
Which includes everything from proper planting to many delicious ways to prepare those vegetables after the spring harvest.
