A yearly treat for fans of the visual and performing arts takes place this coming Saturday evening at The Moon in Tallahassee.
It’s a showcase for some very special artists, as Lana Smith director of Pyramid Studios explained.
“We are a non-profit here in Florida. Here in Tallahassee we serve about 240 people with developmental disabilities at our day program.”
Pyramid Tallahassee was founded in 1994 with Pyramid Studios opening four years after that.
“Just here in June we celebrated our 25th anniversary and we’re still going strong,” Smith said, adding that creative expression is a central component of the organization’s work with clients.
“We teach life skills through the arts here at Pyramid. We have a dance program, instrumental music programs, theatre, a visual arts program that includes painting, jewelry, sculpture, all kinds of different things.” Which brings us to this Saturday’s creative extravaganza, which begins with a multi-media art exhibit.
“We have an art show that is not only going to feature the art work that is produced by our students in the Tallahassee location, but all of the Pyramids across the state because there are five Pyramids in Florida.”
Smith said that is the lead-in to the stage performances.
“The performing arts aspect will feature a pre-show with our rock band The Electric People. Then the show itself is an originally written musical written by our students in a script writing class and performed by our students as well.”
This year’s show theme is quite different from any of its predecessors.
“This is the first year that we are going with a western theme. We’ve put a lot of contemporary and classic country music into the show that I think the audience is going to like. It’s called ‘Wild Times at the Lucky Star’ and we’re calling it a boot-scootin’ musical!”
That description would seem especially apt, as this all happens at the same venue that’s become regionally famous for its regular “Stetsons on the Moon” country nights.
“I really want to put a shout-out to Scott and Julie Carswell (the owners of The Moon) who have been supporting us for over 10 years, opening up their doors to this wonderful event.”
