The Tallahassee/Leon County Commission on the Status of Women and Girls (CSWG) will task its Violence and Safety Subcommittee with explaining micro-aggressions to the public.

Microaggressions can refer to unintentional derogatory comments made toward someone of a marginalized group. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, they could unintentionally express a prejudiced attitude. Rebekah Dorn serves as Commissioner to CSWG’s Violence and Safety Subcommittee. Dorn views micro-aggressions as a possible forerunner to sexual violence:

“These are the small microaggressions that happen at small levels. This could be catcalling. This could be locker room bantering. It could include some groping as it kind of progresses on and so things that we think and we—we forgive quite easily are just like the beginning—the root issues that ultimately escalate to this point of abuse,” says Dorn.

The meeting will take place at The Oasis Center for Women and Girls on August 9 at 11:30 am.
