A Leon County Sheriff's Office command staff member is under investigation by the state attorney, according to an executive order signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis Wednesday.

Joe McCabe, director of the human relations department and member of the executive command staff, is under investigation by State Attorney Jack Campbell for "a possible organized scheme to defraud," the executive order says.

An LCSO spokeswoman said McCabe is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

DeSantis reassigned the investigation to the State Attorney Jeffrey Siegmeister of the Third Judicial Circuit.

Campbell asked DeSantis to transfer the case because of a conflict of interest. Joe McCabe worked with Campbell's father, Larry Campbell, when he served as sheriff.

McCabe oversees payroll, procurement, extra duty details and the administrative call center for the agency.

No other details were immediately available.

This is a developing story.
