Local Legion Marks Memorial Day

Tom Flanigan

Among the Capital City's Memorial Day ceremonies was the annual tribute at Oakland Cemetery hosted by the Sauls-Bridges Post 13 American Legion.

There was the playing of Taps and a 21-gun salute to the nation's fallen service members. In his remarks, Local Legion Post Commander Val Frailey focused on the wrenching experience of so many who fought and died in Vietnam War.

"They didn't fight for flag and country," he told the group of several dozen veterans and their families. "They fought for each other!"

Frailey included a soldier's lament from the period in his remarks. "Lay me down in the cold, cold ground," he sang at one point.

Meanwhile, the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion is on June 6th. Three days later, Post Past Commander Charles Lecroix said another milestone will be marked.

"Sunday, June 9th is the 100th anniversary of the American Legion," he explained, adding the local legion hall will hold a gala celebration that day.
